We’re helping people with disability respond better in emergencies

Over the past few years, Australia has been faced with numerous disasters, from the COVID pandemic, to floods, bushfires and other severe weather events. So it’s important that everyone in our community knows how to prepare and respond, so they can stay safe.

And yet we know that people with disability are disproportionately impacted due to a range of issues including access requirements and communication barriers. Often, they are just not part of the conversation!

Our Executive Manager Disability Support and Business Growth Thom Calma and one of our disability participants, Lex, recently took part in the filming of a video series for the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. It aims to educate both NDIS participants and providers about how to respond in the event of an emergency or disaster, to preserve the safety, dignity and rights of people with disability.

The video series and a suite of resources will launch in June 2024.
